During the oil extraction, the vegetable oil is removed from the cell structure using a solvent, usually n-hexane, which is a volatile and inflammable liquid. In order to enable the solvent to penetrate unhindered into the seed, the cell walls have to be broken up and the diffusion paths have to be made as short as possible.

Considering the importance of seed preparation and kernel extraction, kernel grating and drying (heating), and moisture conditioning during the oil extraction using a mechanical screw press and chemical extraction (n-hexane as a solvent) a study is deemed necessary to determine the effects of these parameters on the yield of oil extraction.
For the second extraction, n-hexane was mixed up at a ratio of 1:1 to the conical flasks which contained the kernels. The oil extraction process was continued up to the total recovery of the oil. In most of the cases, the oil extraction was completed within 3 extraction stages.

This study investigated the rate of diffusion on the extraction of palm kernel oil using various solvents, namely, n-hexane, Benzene, Trichloroethylene, and Carbondisulfide. The solvents and the extracted palm kernel oil were characterized using the AOCS standard methods, and the results are shown in tables 1 and 2.
